DJI is one of the biggest names when it comes to the drone industry and once again have managed to put us all in awe of their latest drone, the Mavic Air. Part of the Mavic family the Air has definitely got some of the best parts from the Mavic Pro except they have shrunk even more making it one of the most portable 4K drones out there.
DJI hase once again created a marvel of engineering and design by packing all the high-end features into such a small drone. Folded up the Mavic Air is just 168×83×49 mm (L×W×H) and compared to it’s big brother the Mavic Pro which when folded is 198×83×83 mm (L×W×H). But it doesn’t fold out to some giant drone because even unfolded it measures in at a tiny 168×184×64 mm (L×W×H) way smaller than its brother.
Photography wise is there much difference between the Air and the Pro? Well no, they both feature a 3-Axis Mechanical Gimbal, 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, a max video resolution of 4K @30 fps and have a max photo resolution of 12 MP. So it matches big brother that’s not just it, in fact the Mavic Air has a greater ISO range for still photos a larger still image size and HDR support.
Now the Mavic Air so far outweighs the Pro in every single aspect especially since it is £400 cheaper than the Pro. But it has to be undermined by the pro in some aspects which is true. But, can do something incredible, in addition to your normal horizontal, vertical, and 180° panoramas, the Mavic Air can stitch 25 photos together in just eight seconds to create crystal-clear 32 MP Sphere panoramas. Not only this but the Air also features 6 QuickShots including boomerang and the all-new favourite asteroid, both which can be seen in the Mavic Air sample video below.
Don’t be expecting to fly the Mavic Air as far as the Mavic Pro though. Although still impressive the Mavic Air only has a max flight transmission distance of 4 kilometres compared to the Pro’s 7 kilometres. In addition to this don’t be expecting it to be doing any terrian follow, point of interest or course lock intelligent flight modes. The Mavic Air can only operate for 21 minutes at 25kph, 6 minutes less than the Pro can.
Yeah it may not beat the Mavic Pro in all aspects but for its price, portability and all the features that it has over the Pro, we must say the Mavic Air is worth every single penny. DJI are definitely at the front of the drone industry pushing new and more user friendly drones at more affordable prices.
